5/2/13 - NOBLE TUNE Skims Hedge to Grab American Turf G2T

Courtesy of the Blood Horse

Favored Noble Tune, saving all the ground for Javier Castellano, fired through an opening along the hedge to register an easy victory in the $234,200 American Turf Stakes (gr. IIT) May 3 at Churchill Downs..

Noble Tune, a son of Unbridled's Song trained by Chad Brown for Martin S. Schwartz and breeder Dell Ridge Farm, defeated Admiral Kitten by 1 3/4 lengths on the 1 1/16-mile test of 3-year-olds. The winning dark bay or brown colt is out of the Storm Cat mare Serena's Cat, a daughter of champion and Hall of Fame member Serena's Song.

Second choice War Dancer finished third. The final time was 1:41.63 over firm turf.

The American Turf directly preceded the Longines Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) on the Churchill Downs Friday program.

Noble Tune won for the fourth time in five starts and registered his second graded stakes win as the 3-2 favorite in the field of 11. His lone defeat came in last fall's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (gr. IT) when second to George Vancouver by 1 1/4 lengths at Santa Anita Park.

He was entered in the American Turf as a second option when Brown decided against running Noble Tune in the Toyota Blue Grass (gr. I) at Keeneland because he was unhappy with the way the colt was handling the Polytrack.

Noble Tune came into the race off a one-mile allowance victory on the grass by a nose over Are You Kidding Me at Tampa Bay Downs March 9 in his first start of the year.

"We ran him at Tampa in order to get him ready for the Blue Grass," Brown noted. "But when we got him to Keeneland, he couldn't handle the track. The owners were bummed, but I talked them into waiting for this race. I'm glad we did. I don't want to run him anywhere but on the turf. No dirt. As long as he's with me, he'll stay on grass."

Castellano settled Noble Tune nicely in fourth along the inside as Anyriderill Do, breaking from the rail, took the early advantage while floating out to the center of the course. Anyriderill Do worked his way back to nearer the hedge and led Positively and Joelito through fractions of :24.35, :48.59, and 1:12.56 with Noble Tune continuing to stalk comfortably in fourth.

Noble Tune appeared to be stuck in a pocket as Anyriderill Do showed the way into upper stretch. But Anyriderill Do drifted out in the lane under Miguel Mena, opening a big gap along the inside approaching the eighth pole, which Castellano and Noble Tune quickly exploited. Noble Tune drew off quickly in the final furlong, holding sway easily as Admiral Kitten, taking the overland route for Mike Smith, emerged late to claim the runner-up spot.

"It was a beautiful trip," said Castellano, who previously won the American Turf in 2005 with Rey de Café. "I was expecting to lay off the pace a little bit, but he was sharp today and he lay a little closer. On the backside, I saved all the ground. I waited for the best opportunity and turning for home, the rail opened up and he took it."

It was half a length back to War Dancer and Alan Garcia in third. Joelito stuck around for fourth, followed by Anyriderill Do, Channel Isle, Tenforthemoney, Positively, Bashaar, Fire Guard, and Prado Cat.

Noble Tune boosted his career bankroll to $473,422 with the winner's share of $136,492..

"Javier gave him an awesome ride," Brown said of the winning trip. "He's patient. He rides a lot of horses like that for me."

8/21/11 - Custom Care Equine prepared Travers candidate J W BLUE (Sky Mesa) took a spin around Saratoga's fast main track in his final serious prep for the Mid-Summer Derby. He is a homebred for Stuart Grant (The Elkstone Group), owner of the Camden Training Center in Camden, SC, a facility that features one-mile and five-furlong dirt tracks, a seven-furlong turf course and turn-out paddocks. This is Custom Care Equine's home.

Under exercise rider Ricky Legall, J W Blue ran on the inside of workmate and Dwyer S. (G2) fourth Tech Fall (Birdstone). The two went around virtually on even terms with J W Blue slightly ahead the entire time. They were close behind another horse working in front of them, and J W Blue reached that horse during his strong gallop-out.

Trainer Tony Dutrow said J W Blue, second by a neck and head, respectively in his last two, the Barbaro S. and Floor Show S., was working 4 1/2 furlongs, although the NYRA clockers timed the effort as five furlongs in 1:00 1/5, eighth best of 41 at the distance. Tech Fall received the same clocking.

"J W Blue has never been an impressive work horse," Dutrow said afterward. "His workouts are workmanlike, and I saw a workmanlike workout today with a very good gallop out. I feel like our horse is well prepared to run Saturday."

J W Blue was on the Triple Crown trail in Arkansas this past winter, taking an allowance before running off-the-board in the Rebel S. (G2) and Arkansas Derby (G1) in his next two. Dutrow shipped him to Pimlico for the Federico Tesio S., and the dark bay finished third that day. J W Blue then moved to Delaware Park, where he recorded his Floor Show and Barbaro seconds.

"His last race was good," Dutrow said. "We always hoped he was capable. He's always been an immature horse. These last six weeks he is not immature anymore. He just grew up."

Courtesy of the Blood-Horse

Get Stormy dictated a soft pace and repelled his rivals in the stretch to capture the $576,000 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (gr. IT) by three-quarters of a length on the turf at Churchill Downs May 7.

The Turf Classic, at 1 1/8 miles on a grass course rated firm, is the final race on the Churchill card prior to the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).

Ramon Dominguez took advantage of a lack of speed among the field of 13 following the morning scratch of Little Mike, sending Get Stormy to the front soon after the start. The 5-year-old son of Stormy Atlantic never looked back while timed in a slow 1:50.81.

Bred by Mary Sullivan and owned by Sullimar Stables, Get Stormy is trained by Tom Bush. The bay horse was overlooked at 7-1 in the evenly-matched field in spite of winning Keeneland's Maker's Mark Mile (gr. IT) in his last start April 15 with a similar front-running style.

In the process of winning consecutive grade I events, Get Stormy went over the $1 million mark in career earnings.

Get Stormy established an easy pace, opening up by about two lengths early over Smart Bid and Rahystrada while clipping off an opening quarter mile in :24.88, the half in :50.34 and six furlongs in 1:14.75. Get Stormy inched away to a clear lead in upper stretch for Dominguez and led 2 1/2 lengths mid-stretch. He had plenty left in the final furlong as Smart Bid drew closer and Doubles Partner rallied for Julien Leparoux. Rahystrada finished fourth.

This was the second win in three starts for Get Stormy on the Churchill turf. He captured the Commonwealth Turf (gr. IIIT) as a 3-year-old in Nov. 2009. In his only other start over the course, the bay ran last of 11 in last fall's TVG Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT).

Get Stormy won a pair of grade II races at Saratoga last summer, the Fourstardave and Bernard Baruch handicaps, but was winless in four starts since until dominating the Maker's Mark by 2 3/4 lengths. His overall mark stands at 10-2-2 in 22 races with earnings of $1,128,093. The Turf Classic victory was worth $332,122.

Very rank early, she threw her head when jockey Russell Baze tried to restrain her out of the gate, and had some trouble negotiating the first turn under a short hold. Baze got the filly to relax a bit on the backstretch, and she relinquished the lead, easing back to fourth as they entered the far turn. Eased off the rail when they turned for home, Justenufappeal accelerated once clear, opening up in the final sixteenth and holding away under a mild hand ride.

Courtesy of the Blood Horse

Custom Care Equine prepared GET STORMY broke on top and never looked back, kicking away in the stretch to post a 2 3/4–length victory in the $300,000 Maker’s Mark Mile (gr. IT) April 15 at Keeneland.

It was the first grade I victory for Get Stormy, who earned his first win in three starts this year. The 5-year-old son of Stormy Atlantic is owned by his breeder, Mary A. Sullivan’s Sullimar Stable, and trained by Tom Bush. Javier Castellano rode the bay horse to victory in a final time of 1:37.31 on a turf course labeled good.

Get Stormy outhustled Workin for Hops to the first turn and was allowed to get away with easy fractions in the field of eight. He posted splits of :24.61, :49.31, and 1:14.01 while maintaining a comfortable lead over Workin for Hops and Rosie Napravnik.

Workin for Hops gave his best shot in upper stretch, as did favored Court Vision and Zifzaf from the inside, and Society's Chairman on the outside, but they were no match for the winner.

Workin for Hops settled for second, a neck in front of Society’s Chairman, who was a head better than Court Vision in third. In the 2010 Maker’s Mark Mile, Court Vision ran second, while Society’s Chairman was third.

"He's a really nice horse," said Castellano, who won three races on the day. "Tom, he did a great job with the horse. He broke great out of the gate. I just went to the lead and enjoyed my trip. We had a lot of fun."

Get Stormy was a tiring eighth in his season debut, the Jan. 9 Ft. Lauderdale (gr. IIIT) at Gulfstream Park. He returned to finish an improved third, beaten one length in the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap (gr. IT) on Feb. 5.

Prior to the Maker’s Mark Mile, Get Stormy’s biggest wins came last year in the Fourstardave and Bernard Baruch handicaps (both gr. IIT) at Saratoga. This was the fifth graded stakes win of his career. Overall, he improved to 9-2-2 from 21 starts and earnings of $795,961.

"He's been a real wonderful horse to have in the barn," Bush said. "We thought he could win a grade I, and we're thrilled to get it done today."

AMy assistant up there, Cherie Devaux, has done a really good job with her." As for what's next, Brown added, AIt looked like she ran a hard race, so we'll see how shecomes out of it. Get Stormy won for the seventh time in his last eight trips to the races, coming from just off the pace for an easy victory here. A two-time winner at the meet last year, including a first black-type badge in the Lure S., the flashy bay colt ran his winning streak to five in the May 22 Elkwood S. at Monmouth Park, but faltered to finish fourth over good Woodbine turf in the GII King Edward S. June 27. He rediscovered his winning ways last time out, recovering from a stumble at the start to wire the field in the GII Fourstardave H. Aug. 1. Content to concede the front end to National Kid (Brz) (Dodge) after getting away cleanly this time around, Get Stormy responded when asked the question by jockey Javier Castellano leaving the quarter pole and quickened up nicely to score by a comfortable margin. "He's the type of horse you can do whatever you want with him," Castelano said. "When I pushed the button, he took off. He had a lot left in the end. I was excited for him today because this was a mile and an eighth race. The question was if he could handle the distance, and he did."

She waited to make her run until the quarter pole, swept four wide to challenge the pacesetting Proclaim (Pulpit), and proved too good in the final furlong, drawing off to win by 3 1/2 lengths. Proclaim held for second.

Get Stormy kicked off a four-race winning streak over this course last summer, taking an allowance test in July and the Lure S. in August. The bay made it three in a row in the GIII Bryan Station S. at Keeneland in October, and held on gamely in his final start of the year, annexing the GIII Commonwealth S. at Churchill Nov. 15 by a nose. Making his comeback after a six month vacation in the Elkwood S. at Monmouth May 22, he powered home a 3 1/2-length winner. The four-year-old shipped to Woodbine for his latest, the GII King Edward S. June 27, but failed to threaten and ran fourth as the favorite. The chalk once again with the return to the Spa, Get Stormy broke awkwardly, but got it together in a matter of strides and went right to the lead. He set a solid pace and had plenty in the tank when they hit the lane, holding Public Speaker safe in the drive to the wire. "He was really kind of
rattling down the backside, and I wasn't sure if he'd have enough left," trainer Tom Bush admitted. "The fractions were pretty legit. This horse is really something special." The ultimate goal for the winner will be the GI Breeders' Cup Mile.

Get Stormy has been unstoppable since clearing his first-level condition on Saratoga's opening day last summer. The blaze-faced bay added the Lure S. over that course Aug. 29, then travelled to the Bluegrass State and picked up a pair of graded trophies, Keeneland' s GIII Bryan Station S. Oct. 18 and the GIII Commonwealth Turf S. at Churchill Nov. 15. He assumed his customary spot on the front end and went on to have his picture taken for the fifth straight time ."I thought they might put a little more pressure on him early," said winning trainer Bush said. "He's so handy on the turns--I knew when he charged away on the far turn that he was in good shape." Bush added, "The [GIII Monmouth S. [June 12] is a possibility.
